Enzo Maresca: Pellegrini is my master, the final will be tough!
Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s head coach, says the UEFA Conference League final against Real Betis, led by Manuel Pellegrini, will be difficult.
According to reports, Chelsea advanced to the UEFA Conference League final after defeating Djurgårdens in the two-legged semifinal. Following a 4-1 victory in Sweden last week, the Blues secured a 1-0 win in the return leg at Stamford Bridge. A stunning first-half goal from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was enough to seal Chelsea’s place in the final. Enzo Maresca, Chelsea’s head coach, spoke to the media after the match.
On reaching the Conference League final:
We worked hard every day to reach the final, and now we are here. The next step is winning it. We have 20 days to prepare.
On facing Real Betis in the final:
I just watched Betis’ game. Now we have 20 days to prepare. I played for Sevilla against Betis for four years. I even scored in the derby. Manuel Pellegrini is one of my masters. I’m very happy.
What does this success mean to you?
It’s very important for me personally because we can give this club and its fans the chance to be the first European team to win all three club competitions. The Conference League is a starting point to build a winning mentality and achieve more titles in the future.
Your thoughts on Pellegrini?
I learned a lot from him—how to manage players and lineups. I was his assistant for two years, and I know how he thinks and interacts with players. He’s a great person. I personally tried to learn as much as possible from him. Playing against his team is tough!
On Walsh’s first start?
Do you like him? He’s good, right? I like Reggie too. He fits my system perfectly and plays the way I want. He’s only 16 and confidently asks for the ball. Tomorrow he has to go to school—that’s important for him. He wasn’t worried at all. I told him to play like in training, no difference.
Any other thoughts on the final against Betis?
I met my wife in Seville. My first son was born there. I want to win this trophy for the club and the fans, no doubt.
