    Who Will Replace Kounde?

Flick’s Urgent Decision Before Inter and El Clasico

Hans-Dieter Flick is currently facing a dilemma: finding a suitable replacement for Jules Kounde at the right-back position, especially ahead of two crucial matches against Inter and Real Madrid within five days.

Flick's Urgent Decision Before Inter and El Clasico

According to reports, Kounde, who has played 5,045 minutes this season (4,381 for Barcelona and 664 for the French national team), suffered an injury in the first leg of the Champions League semifinal against Inter. He has been a key player for Barcelona this season—a reliable and consistent defender, forming a strong partnership with Lamine Yamal and even scoring a decisive goal in the Copa del Rey final.

Flick must now find a replacement for Kounde in a short time. The primary option is Eric Garcia, a La Masia graduate. Garcia, who has experience working with Pep Guardiola at Manchester City and Luis Enrique with the Spanish national team, possesses high tactical intelligence. Last season at Girona under Michel, he played a hybrid role between center-back and full-back, showcasing his versatility. However, matches against Inter and Real Madrid present different challenges. Inter does not have wingers like Vinicius or Rodrygo, which could be an advantage for Garcia.

Ronald Araujo, another option, excelled in this position under Xavi to contain Vinicius, but his attacking limitations make him less ideal against a team like Inter, which defends deep. Inter, with players like Barella, Calhanoglu, and Mkhitaryan in midfield, along with Dimarco and Dumfries on the flanks, is highly dangerous in transition. Losing possession in this match could prove costly for Barcelona.

Hector Fort, the third option, is a young player who lacks defensive maturity, and Flick has rarely trusted him. However, Fort is bold and effective in attack and could be utilized if other options fail. He has the opportunity to prove himself against Valladolid. Injuries have ruled out other options like Marc Casado, whom Xavi tested in this position. Alternatives like Christensen, Gavi, De Jong, or even Balde playing out of position do not seem logical. Flick must make the best decision quickly for these two critical matches.
