Florian Wirtz: I Won’t Choose My Next Team Based on Money!
Florian Wirtz, Bayer Leverkusen’s midfielder, has spoken for the first time about transfer rumors, confirming that financial matters will not influence his next destination.
Florian Wirtz, in an interview with “Sports Illustrated Germany,” discussed the possibility of a transfer for the first time and expressed readiness for a new challenge.
Reports suggest Wirtz has informed Xabi Alonso that he will not follow him to Real Madrid if the young coach moves there, nor is he interested in Manchester City, as he has chosen Bayern Munich as his next destination.
Wirtz stated: “I am certainly eager to step out of my comfort zone and experience something new. I know the football dressing room environment well and am confident I can quickly establish myself anywhere.”
Wirtz, considered one of Germany’s brightest talents, showed readiness for the next step in his career. He expressed satisfaction with his journey so far, describing it as a great opportunity: “I was lucky to have big clubs nearby and now play for one of the best clubs in Germany and Europe.”
Reflecting on his time at Leverkusen, which won the Bundesliga in 2024, Wirtz expressed happiness about playing for the club. He emphasized that financial matters are not a priority in his decisions: “When I moved from Cologne to Leverkusen, I didn’t think about my salary for a second—only about what was best for my career. I don’t think about how much money I have or will earn in the future. Of course, you have to ensure you sign a good contract, but the sporting aspect is much more important to me than money. I think if I focus too much on money, my parents would be upset.”
Regarding speculation about his future, Wirtz added: “When people write about where I’ll play next season, I have to laugh. No one but me can know that.”
