Genoa Fans’ Bizarre Celebration: Sampdoria’s Relegation with a Coffin
A group of Genoa fans reacted to their rival club’s relegation by designing a coffin with Sampdoria’s flag to mock their downfall.
According to reports, the historic club Sampdoria, with a legacy of winning Serie A and the European Cup, officially dropped to the third tier after a draw against Juve Stabia in the final match of Serie B, leaving half of Genoa’s population in despair.
The other half of the city, known for its passionate football fans, has been celebrating their rival’s relegation since last night. Genoa fans even went as far as parading a coffin painted in Sampdoria’s colors around the city to mock their long-time rivals.
However, the two teams faced each other in the Round of 16 of the Italian Cup this season, where Sampdoria advanced past Genoa on penalties, marking the last derby between them with a victory for the Blues.
Given Sampdoria’s shocking relegation to Serie C, it is unlikely that this derby will be held again anytime soon, unless Sampdoria manages another surprise run deep into the Italian Cup, giving them a chance to avenge Genoa fans’ harsh taunts.
Out of 108 meetings between Genoa and Sampdoria, Sampdoria has won 43 times, while Genoa has only secured 26 victories.
