Ilkay Gundogan stated that Barcelona had different plans for him and he chose to leave the club to avoid causing problems for others.
 
Gundogan was a key player for Barcelona during the 2023-2024 season under Xavi Hernandez. Despite adapting well, he left after just one season. In an interview with German outlet Bild, he explained the details of his departure.

Gundogan said: “Initially, they signed me to bring experience to the team and the club.”

“Everything was going well until things changed,” Gundogan continued. “Eventually, I thought it was better to leave. I realized that despite what I consider a very good season, they were in favor of my departure mainly for financial reasons. I am the type of person who prefers not to stay just for the contract if it causes problems for others.”

Gundogan’s contract with Barcelona was valid until the end of the following season. Despite his departure, he holds no bad memories. He said: “I always dreamed of playing for Barça, and I fulfilled that dream. In April 2024, I spoke with Xavi Hernandez about my future. I think he is a great coach, and we played well under him—it’s just that Real Madrid was too strong.”
 
When Gundogan considered his future in the summer of 2024, his wife Sara suggested: “Call Pep!” He did, and Pep Guardiola immediately welcomed his return to Manchester City.
 
The departure of Xavi and the arrival of Hans-Dieter Flick did not influence Gundogan’s decision to leave. He said about Flick: “We always had a great relationship. After the holidays, I was motivated to work with him again, but it didn’t happen. Apparently, the club had other plans. For example, Hansi called me on my birthday. I sincerely congratulate him and the club on their current success.”
