Haaland Admits: We Dropped This Season Because We Lacked Motivation!

After four consecutive Premier League titles, Manchester City has endured a season that Haaland described as “disastrous.”

Under Pep Guardiola’s leadership, the team currently sits fourth in the league table, 18 points behind champions Liverpool. City also failed to win the UEFA Champions League and the EFL Cup this season, though they still have a chance to lift the FA Cup, facing Crystal Palace in the final on Saturday.

Several factors contributed to City’s decline, including injuries and poor performances in some matches. However, one reason Haaland pointed out may be particularly concerning for City fans.

Haaland emphasized that one of the reasons for the team’s poor performance was a lack of motivation and hunger for success among the players. The Norwegian striker openly admitted that he himself had not performed well and failed to help the team as he should have.

In an interview with ESPN, Haaland said: “You can make excuses for all of this. Injuries, at the worst possible time, but in the end, we didn’t play well enough. We didn’t have the inner hunger. I wasn’t good enough, I didn’t help the team.”

Haaland added that Manchester City must rediscover that inner drive to compete next season.

He said: “The club has set high standards for itself, and when we call this season ‘disastrous,’ we’ve said it all. Next season, we must find something in our hearts to attack the title with.”

While Haaland scored 52 goals in all competitions in his first season at City, that number dropped to 38 in his second season. So far this season, he has scored 30 goals.

City has shown signs of returning to form in recent weeks, securing five consecutive wins in all competitions, but last week they were held to a goalless draw against relegated Southampton.

Guardiola’s team will finish the Premier League season with two games remaining—one against Bournemouth at home and another against Fulham away.

Manchester City has suffered nine league defeats this season, a record that must significantly improve if they want to compete for the title again next season. City will also participate in the upcoming Club World Cup in the summer, drawn in a group with Juventus, Wydad Casablanca, and Al Ain.
