Kosovo’s Appeal Rejected: You Left the Field, Lost 3-0
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the Kosovo Football Federation’s appeal, upholding their 3-0 defeat against Romania.
The Kosovo Football Federation had filed a complaint with CAS against UEFA’s decision regarding their controversial match against Romania, but the court dismissed it today, closing the case in favor of UEFA and Romania.
The incident stems from a UEFA Nations League match between Kosovo and Romania in November, hosted by Romania. Midway through the game, Kosovo players claimed that Romanian fans were chanting provocative slogans, leading them to leave the field.
The match was abandoned and later declared over by the referee. UEFA ruled that Kosovo forfeited the game 3-0 for leaving the field. Kosovo appealed, but UEFA’s appeals committee upheld the decision.
Kosovo then took the case to CAS, arguing that the Romanian Football Federation was responsible for the match’s abandonment due to failing to control their fans. Kosovo claimed Romanian supporters chanted “Kosovo is Serbia,” making it impossible for their players to continue.
However, CAS ruled today that Kosovo players left the field without consulting the referee. Had they informed the referee and requested a decision on whether to stop or continue, the case might have taken a different path. Under current circumstances, UEFA’s decision was correct, and the 3-0 result stands.
