Lothar Matthaus:
Leroy Sane’s benching was retaliation for not renewing contract
Lothar Matthaus, former German football star and Sky Sports analyst, believes Bayern Munich sent a warning to Leroy Sane by benching him!
According to reports, Leroy Sane started Bayern Munich’s last home game of the season on the bench. Could this be related to his recent change of agent? Lothar Matthaus has openly expressed his opinion on the matter.
Leroy Sane’s decision to change his agent continues to stir controversy. During Thomas Muller’s farewell ceremony against Borussia Monchengladbach, Sane had to start the match from the bench. Is this related to his agent change? Lothar Matthaus, a TV analyst, said on Sky: “Anyone who doesn’t see something suspicious in this is naive. I’m aware of recent discussions about the agent change. I think this is a small retaliatory reaction from the club. They want to show: This is not how you treat us!”
Lothar Matthaus appeared again as an analyst on Sky’s TV program on Saturday night. The issue of Sane’s agent change has caused anger because the new agent is none other than “Pini Zahavi,” the same person whom Uli Hoeness, Bayern’s supervisory board chairman, once referred to as a “money-grabber” during tough negotiations over David Alaba’s contract extension.
Although Bayern officials have maintained their composure outwardly, behind the scenes the situation is tense. According to Lothar Matthaus, Sane’s exclusion from the starting lineup in the first game after the news of his agent change broke is a direct reaction to this decision. He said: “From a sporting perspective, Sane has performed well in recent weeks, so this benching is non-technical.”
When Sane was substituted in the 62nd minute of the match against Gladbach, some fans in the stadium whistled in protest against him.
