Manchester United’s Luck: Absence of Three Athletic Bilbao Stars
Nico Williams, Iñaki Williams, and Oihan Sancet will not be available for Athletic Bilbao against Manchester United.
According to reports, Manchester United took full control of the UEFA Europa League semi-final first leg last week with a dominant 3-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés Stadium, taking a huge step towards this year’s final.
Athletic Bilbao had the best defensive record in Spain and the best home defensive record among Europe’s top five leagues before this match, conceding only 10 goals at home. However, goals from Casemiro and a brace from Bruno Fernandes completely surprised and overwhelmed the hosts.
Ernesto Valverde will be without several key players for the return leg. Dani Vivian received a direct red card for a harsh foul on Rasmus Højlund, leading to a penalty and the third goal, and is suspended.
However, the bigger absence is that of the Williams brothers. These two influential players, who are not on the travel list to Manchester, will miss this crucial match due to injuries.
Nico Williams has been struggling with a groin injury in recent weeks and has not received medical clearance to travel, ruling him out. His older brother, Iñaki Williams, is also dealing with a hamstring injury, and the club has stated they are awaiting further treatment for him.
Both brothers have scored 11 goals for the team this season. Athletic will also be without their top scorer, Oihan Sancet. The Spanish international, who has scored 17 goals this season, also missed the first leg due to a hamstring injury and is not yet fit to play.
With Manchester United already the favorites to reach the final, the absence of several key players from the opposition has made the dream of an all-English final against Tottenham even more realistic.
