Matthijs de Ligt’s injury in the first half of Manchester United’s match against Brentford was a major blow to Rúben Amorim’s plans for the Europa League.
Manchester United started their home game against Brentford well, taking an early lead with a goal from Mason Mount. However, things took a bitter turn for the Red Devils as they conceded two goals, turning their 1-0 lead into a 2-1 deficit. Shortly after conceding the second goal, Matthijs de Ligt suffered an injury.
De Ligt had been sidelined since early April due to injury and had just returned to the Premier League after nearly a month out. However, he lasted only 30 minutes before being forced off the pitch again.
De Ligt had come on in the second half of United’s Europa League semi-final against Athletic Bilbao but was making his first start under Amorim today. In the 35th minute against Brentford, de Ligt went down after a collision with Embuemo and immediately signaled to the bench that he needed to be substituted. Amorim called upon Harry Maguire, who was supposed to rest today, and Maguire replaced the Dutch defender in the 35th minute.
