Marco van Basten:
Barcelona Should Change Lamine Yamal’s Position Soon
Marco van Basten, the legendary Dutch footballer, urged Hans-Dieter Flick to consider changing Lamine Yamal’s position.
According to “Varzesh3,” Yamal delivered another mesmerizing performance against Inter Milan in the unforgettable UEFA Champions League semi-final at the San Siro on Tuesday night.
The young player troubled Inter’s defenders with his relentless and bewildering dribbles. Even when double-marked, he remained a constant threat to the Italian goal. He completed 14 successful dribbles in the match, a record unmatched in the Champions League since Neymar’s exploits eight years ago.
Yamal also shone in the first leg, scoring Barcelona’s spectacular opening goal. Over the past week, he has garnered even more attention, especially after his standout performances for Spain in last summer’s European Championship. Many now consider him the best winger in world football, with some even tipping him for the next Ballon d’Or.
Van Basten, the three-time Ballon d’Or winner, was among those amazed by Yamal’s performances against Inter. However, he believes Barcelona and Hans-Dieter Flick should start thinking about moving the young prodigy to a central role, which he describes as the “next step” in the player’s development.
Van Basten told Ziggo Sport: “It’s a shame he plays on the right wing because he doesn’t get enough of the ball. Of course, his presence on the right is always threatening. But if he plays more centrally, he can have a greater impact on the game and contribute more to the team. I think this is the next step.
He can score, assist, and create chances—we all know that. But the next step should be about maximizing his influence on the team. A player of his caliber should play more centrally.”
