Mario Basler:
Trip to Ibiza is great, don’t bother Bayern players!
Bayern Munich’s recreational trip to Ibiza has caused quite a stir, and now former German football star Mario Basler has weighed in on the debate.
Bayern Munich’s short trip to the Mediterranean island of Ibiza continues to spark reactions, but Basler, who himself has played for Bayern, can’t understand all the fuss.
He told Sport1: “There’s nothing wrong with it. They’ve become champions, why shouldn’t they go somewhere and have some fun? I don’t even know why there’s so much noise. They went to Ibiza, great, stop bothering them so much!”
The 56-year-old veteran also defended some Bayern players’ visit to the ‘Therme Erding’ spa complex. According to Bild, Thomas Müller, who is leaving the team, had invited some players to a friendly meeting at this center after returning from Ibiza.
Basler joked: “I don’t know why they even thought of it. They could have gone to a kids’ ball pool instead! But well, Thomas Müller invited them, and they went. They didn’t have to go, but there’s no reason to oppose it. If we were in their place, we’d probably stay in Ibiza one more day rather than go to a ball pool!”
This trip to Ibiza became controversial because the club’s management had initially canceled the planned post-championship trip due to ongoing Bundesliga matches.
But now they’ve given the green light, even though the last league match against Hoffenheim is still important for the fate of relegation-threatened teams.
Hoffenheim is three points above Heidenheim, who are currently in the relegation playoff spot. If Hoffenheim loses heavily to Bayern and Heidenheim beats Werder Bremen at the same time, a swap could occur.
Basler said: “It’s a bit unlucky that Bayern is playing against Hoffenheim, but maybe it’s even good for Heidenheim. Now all eyes are on Bayern, and I don’t think their players will underperform.”
