Matteo Gabbia:
Referee Made Mistakes but Milan Didn’t Deserve the Title
Matteo Gabbia believes that refereeing errors impacted AC Milan’s match against Bologna, but the team also failed to deliver a strong performance.
Matteo Gabbia played in AC Milan’s recent match against Bologna, which ended in a 1-0 defeat, costing the Rossoneri the Coppa Italia title. Despite his efforts, Milan failed to secure the valuable trophy.
Gabbia spoke to Sport Mediaset after the match: “We are upset with how the game went, and it’s hard to find the right words. We feel regret and disappointment because this season hasn’t been a good one for us. It was a bad night that could have been great if we had performed better.”
“We knew Bologna would press aggressively, a style that has troubled many teams this season. We could and should have done better. In such situations, you need to be strong enough to congratulate your opponent.”
“Right now, we don’t have much energy left. We gave everything we had on the field, but it wasn’t enough. Now, we have two games left to finish the season with pride. Once the season ends, we’ll evaluate, but one thing is undeniable: No one can say this season has been positive for us.”
Controversial refereeing decisions in the closing minutes of the first half angered Milan players. They believed Lewis Ferguson should have received a red card for a harsh tackle on Rafael Leão, not just a yellow. Some Milan players also argued that Sam Beukema deserved a red card for elbowing Gabbia during a corner kick.
When shown footage of the incidents, Gabbia responded: “I don’t want to comment on it; it’s pointless now. To me, everything is clear, but it won’t change anything for us. We need to think about where we could have done better. That’s why tonight is bitter, and we return to Milan empty-handed.”
