Erling Haaland’s Absence
Premier League Player of the Season Nominees Revealed with a Surprise
The Premier League has announced the eight nominees for the 2024/25 Player of the Season award, with the Norwegian star of Manchester City notably absent.
Liverpool, the champions this season, have the most representatives with three players: Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Ryan Gravenberch.
They are joined by two players from Nottingham Forest, Morgan Gibbs-White and Chris Wood, who have been outstanding for the surprise team of the Premier League this season.
Alexander Isak, the Newcastle striker, and Bryan Mbeumo, the Brentford winger, are also on the list, while Arsenal, the second-placed team, has only one representative, with Declan Rice competing for the award.
Mohamed Salah is clearly the frontrunner in this race. He has scored and assisted more goals than any other player so far. With 46 goal contributions (goals and assists) in 36 games, Salah is just one goal or assist away from equaling the all-time record for most goal contributions in a single season—a record jointly held by Alan Shearer and Andy Cole, both of whom achieved it in a 42-game season.
Isak, Wood, and Mbeumo are three of the top five scorers in the Premier League, but Erling Haaland of Manchester City, who is third in the scoring charts, has surprisingly been left out of the list.
Fans have until 12 PM British time on Monday to vote for their preferred player via the EA Sports website.
The public votes will then be combined with votes from a panel of football experts to determine the final winner, who will be announced next week.
