Real Madrid’s 35-Year Curse Continues Under Ancelotti

Not Even Ancelotti Could Break It

Real Madrid’s 35-Year Curse Remains Unbroken

Real Madrid and Carlo Ancelotti, despite their countless achievements, have failed to overcome a strange curse in La Liga.

Real Madrid's 35-Year Curse Remains Unbroken

According to reports, no manager in the last 35 years has been able to win La Liga in consecutive seasons with Real Madrid, and Ancelotti is no exception. Real Madrid, with 36 titles, remains the most successful team in La Liga, and Ancelotti is the only manager to have won all five major European leagues (Spain, Italy, England, France, and Germany). However, even he has failed to break the curse of back-to-back La Liga titles.

The last manager to win consecutive La Liga titles with Real Madrid was Leo Beenhakker in 1989, who secured three straight titles (1986-87, 1987-88, and 1988-89) during the golden era of “La Quinta del Buitre.” The team went on to win five consecutive titles (from 1986 to 1990) under managers John Toshack and Alfredo Di Stéfano. Since then, Real Madrid has only defended their title once, in 2007 and 2008, but with different managers: Fabio Capello in 2007 and Bernd Schuster in 2008. Other notable managers like Capello, Vicente del Bosque, Zinedine Zidane, and Ancelotti have won non-consecutive titles. Capello in 1997 and 2007, Del Bosque in 2001 and 2003, Zidane in 2017 and 2020, and Ancelotti in 2022 and 2024 have all won La Liga. Managers like Jorge Valdano (1994-95) and José Mourinho (2010-11) have each won one title.

Ancelotti has only defended a title once in his illustrious career: the German Super Cup with Bayern Munich in 2016-17 and 2017-18. Out of his 28 titles (including six league titles), none have been consecutive. Zidane came close in the 2020-21 season but fell short. The curse of not retaining the La Liga title continues to haunt Real Madrid and its managers, and even Ancelotti, with all his experience and success, has been unable to break it.

This highlights the intense competition and unique challenges of La Liga, making it difficult even for a team like Real Madrid to retain their crown.
