Six Years in Prison for Injuring a Footballer!
Spain’s Supreme Court has sentenced a footballer who injured an opponent several years ago, leaving him wheelchair-bound, to six years in prison.
According to reports, Spain’s Supreme Court today upheld the ruling of the Barcelona Provincial Court, sentencing a veteran league footballer to six years in prison for intentionally and severely injuring an opponent.
The Supreme Court, citing Article 149 of Spain’s Penal Code, stated that the footballer deliberately injured his opponent during a match, causing irreversible damage that left the victim wheelchair-bound for life. The offender was convicted of aggravated assault and sentenced to six years in prison.
The incident occurred in April 2014. During the match, the offending player was sent off in the 80th minute for a foul but later returned to the field and attacked the opponent from behind, striking his neck. This blow caused a spinal injury, permanently confining the victim to a wheelchair.
