Former Striker Faces Heavy Criticism
The Biggest Loser: Parisians’ Revenge on Mbappé
As the Champions League nears its conclusion, Kylian Mbappé is being labeled as the tournament’s biggest loser.
According to “Varzesh3,” the French star joined Real Madrid last summer with hopes of securing Champions League glory more easily, but this season he has come up empty-handed, while his former club, Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), has performed brilliantly so far. PSG, without its biggest stars, has operated like a well-oiled machine and is now chasing a treble, though they will face Simone Inzaghi’s Inter Milan in the Munich final on May 31.
PSG fans have long memories, and in recent hours, they have been recalling an old statement from Mbappé, dating back to March 4, 2023. That night, after surpassing Edinson Cavani with 201 goals in all competitions to become PSG’s all-time top scorer, he made a controversial remark in a press conference: “Does playing against Bayern Munich affect my future? I don’t think so. If I had tied my future to the Champions League, no offense to the club, I would have left a long time ago.”
Kylian essentially admitted that winning the Champions League with PSG was difficult, if not impossible.
For context, these remarks were made four days before the second leg of the Champions League Round of 16 against Bayern Munich. PSG had lost the first leg at home 1-0 (and would lose the return leg as well), and rumors about Mbappé’s future, which later led to his departure from Nasser Al-Khelaifi in the following summer, were already circulating.
Two years later, this statement is now being repeated among Parisians. Paris Saint-Germain has reached its second-ever Champions League final with two victories over Arsenal, the team that eliminated Real Madrid in the quarterfinals (with results of 3-0 and 2-1).
If PSG defeats Inter and finally lifts their dream trophy, Mbappé will undoubtedly become an even bigger target of mockery from PSG fans.
