Race for the Zamora
Thibaut Courtois’ Big Prize in Real Madrid’s Gloomy Season
Thibaut Courtois is fighting for the Zamora Trophy, awarded to the goalkeeper with the fewest goals conceded, in the final weeks of La Liga.
With five weeks remaining in the season, the 32-year-old Courtois has a high chance of winning the award for the fourth time in his career. His main competitors are Jan Oblak of Atlético Madrid and David Soria of Getafe.
Courtois will reach the minimum required matches (28 games with at least 60 minutes per game) to compete for the trophy when he plays against Celta Vigo. So far, he has conceded only 22 goals in 27 La Liga matches, averaging 0.81 goals per game—the best performance among La Liga goalkeepers. Oblak has conceded 27 goals in 32 games (0.84 average), while Soria has let in 30 goals in 33 matches (0.91 average). Oblak, chasing his sixth Zamora Trophy, could set a record, but Courtois currently leads.
This season has not been easy for Courtois and Real Madrid. Multiple injuries, including Courtois missing 13 games (6 in La Liga), and defensive setbacks have affected the team’s performance. Real Madrid has conceded 69 goals in 57 matches this season (1.21 average). However, Courtois has been outstanding in La Liga, keeping 11 clean sheets. He has not conceded in his last three matches against Alavés, Athletic Bilbao, and Getafe, making crucial saves, including two exceptional stops against Getafe. Courtois has kept a clean sheet for 353 minutes since Villarreal’s goal.
The Belgian goalkeeper emphasized after the recent Getafe match that clean sheets result from teamwork and defensive coordination. He previously won the Zamora Trophy in the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons with Atlético Madrid and in 2019-20 with Real Madrid. His 2019-20 performance, with only 20 goals conceded in 34 games (0.59 average), was one of his best. Now, Courtois and Real Madrid hope to repeat past successes by winning the Zamora Trophy and celebrating La Liga glory, though the latter seems far more challenging.
