Flick Came to See Me and Said Thank You
Xavi: I’m Proud to Have Given Lamine Yamal a Chance to Play
Xavi Hernandez, the former Barcelona coach, praised Lamine Yamal and Hans-Dieter Flick in an extensive interview with Atletic, which will be published in two parts.
According to “Varzesh3,” Xavi praised Barcelona’s current coach and said about Lamine Yamal: “I’m proud to have introduced him to the world of football. He is a genius and will become the best player in the world.”
Xavi, in this interview, which the second part is dedicated to his coaching career at Barcelona, spoke about his memories as a player and his family life, which is entirely shaped around Barcelona.
He also mentioned notable points from his meeting with Flick a few months ago, a meeting he had publicized on social media but details had not been revealed until now. He said: “Hans-Dieter came to see me, and we talked for two hours. We have a close relationship, and he told me, ‘Thank you very much. What you built in this team makes me happy. The players train seriously, and part of their professional mindset is inherited from you.'”
Xavi added: “I’m very happy that Barcelona is doing so well. Some think that because I’m no longer the coach, I’m upset about their success. But it’s quite the opposite.”
He criticized the media and board’s atmosphere around the club: “At Barcelona, the media and the board sometimes complicate things. If you say something positive about Flick, it’s as if you’re taking a stance against the previous coach, which was me. This isn’t logical. I have a friendly relationship with Hans-Dieter and his players, and I respect them, just as I respected Ronald Koeman, the coach before me. Koeman deserves credit for bringing Gavi, Balde, and other young talents to the team. I benefited from his work, and he also won the Copa del Rey.”
About introducing young players to the first team, Xavi said proudly: “If you ask me if I’m happy and proud to have introduced Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi to the professional world? Yes, absolutely. Lamine is a genius. He will become the best player in the world.”
