Serious Challenges for the New Manager: Contract Extensions for Milan Stars
The new sporting director of AC Milan will face numerous challenges immediately upon joining the club.
According to reports, this week—or perhaps even these days—will be decisive in selecting the new sporting director for AC Milan. Giorgio Furlani is set to meet with Ighli Tare, who is currently the top candidate. Regardless of who is appointed, the new director will face several priorities in the coming months, including the selection of a new head coach, squad adjustments, and the summer transfer market.
Gazetta dello Sport reported this morning that one of the first issues on the new sporting director’s desk will be contract extensions for Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez. Both players’ contracts expire in 2026. While an agreement with the goalkeeper seemed close in recent weeks, negotiations have since stalled.
Talks to extend Theo Hernandez’s contract have also been suspended for some time, and it remains unclear whether they will resume. Both players are willing to stay, but can AC Milan meet their demands after recent ups and downs? Without new contracts, their departures in the summer are highly likely, though this will naturally depend on the offers Milan receives.
Regarding the squad, the first area needing reinforcement is undoubtedly the defense. For example, the situation of Kyle Walker—who joined on loan from Manchester City in January—must be clarified. A permanent transfer is far from certain, and without Champions League football, the most likely scenario is his return to England.
Specifically, AC Milan must strengthen their center-back position significantly. In midfield, a replacement for Tijjani Reijnders will be sought, while the attack will not face major issues unless substantial offers arrive.
