Son Heung-min Absent for Tottenham’s Crucial Europa League Match
Son Heung-min, Tottenham’s star player, did not travel to Germany for the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt.
According to reports, the 32-year-old Son played 80 minutes in the first leg, which ended in a 1-1 draw in London last week. He then missed the Premier League match against Wolverhampton, which Tottenham lost 4-2.
Manager Ange Postecoglou commented on his captain’s condition upon arrival in Germany: “Son did not travel and was the only player who did not join the team. He has been suffering from foot pain for several weeks and has been playing with discomfort.”
Son has scored seven goals and provided 10 assists in the Premier League this season. The experienced forward has also netted three goals in the Europa League, making a total of 43 appearances across all competitions. In the match against Wolverhampton, Matheus Telles, a loanee at Tottenham, replaced Son on the left wing and managed to score.
Wilson Odobert, the French player who was absent in the match against Wolverhampton, has traveled with the team to Germany this time.
Several key players returned to the squad for Sunday’s match. Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison, both of whom had been sidelined for some time, were back in the lineup. Kulusevski had been injured since the 1-0 loss to Manchester City on February 26. Richarlison, who had not played since the second leg of the League Cup semi-final against Liverpool in January, scored upon his return. Kevin Danso, the central defender who joined the team in January and was sidelined for about six weeks due to a hamstring injury, is now available to the manager.
Tottenham drew 1-1 in the first leg against Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League quarter-finals and now must seek qualification in Germany. Given their current position in the Premier League, their entire focus is on winning the Europa League, and failure to achieve this goal could spell trouble for Ange Postecoglou and the club’s management.
