Ange Postecoglou: I Don’t Care If I Get Sacked!
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou says he does not pay attention to speculation about his future at the club.
Tottenham prepares for the Europa League quarter-final second leg against Eintracht Frankfurt after a 1-1 draw in London. Spurs, who have had a tough season and currently sit 15th in the Premier League, are just two points above 17th-placed Wolverhampton, who defeated them 4-2 last Sunday. Postecoglou addressed reporters in a pre-match press conference ahead of the Frankfurt clash.
Is it fair to say the hopes of saving the season depend on tomorrow’s match? What’s your message to the players?
Honestly, I don’t see it as saving the season but as an opportunity to do something special. It depends on how you look at life. You’re at a point where you can reach the semi-finals of a major tournament. Naturally, you know the challenge, and that’s the exciting part. I don’t think it’s about saving anything. Such opportunities don’t come often, even when you’re having a good season. Why not take advantage?
That’s my message to the players: regardless of what’s happened this season, we’re just one game away from reaching the final four of a major competition. We shouldn’t take this for granted because it hasn’t been common for this club. But now we have the chance, and we must seize it.
Have all the players traveled to Germany? Is Son Heung-min ready to play?
Son hasn’t traveled with the team. He’s the only absentee. He’s been dealing with an issue for weeks and has been playing through pain, but it’s worsened in recent days. Yesterday, he tried to train but wasn’t fit, so we decided to leave him in London to rest and recover.
The rest of the players are fine. The only notable point is that Kevin (Danso) has trained and is available, so it’s really just Sonny who will miss out.
Son is your captain and is missing the biggest game of the season. How does that affect the team?
Yes, his absence is undoubtedly a big blow, but given the events of this season, it’s just another challenge to overcome. He’s also upset because he tried so hard. We left him out of the previous game to give him more recovery time, as he’s been battling this issue for weeks, but he couldn’t make it.
We’ve faced such challenges all season, and this is just another one.
About your future at the club – do you know what will happen at the end of the season?
Do I know? No, I have no idea. We have a game tomorrow night. But I really don’t need to think about these things. I’ve never thought about my career or the path I want to take this way. What matters is that we have a very important game tomorrow. This match is a huge opportunity for this group of players, for the team, and for the club to get closer to what everyone wants. Anything outside of that, especially regarding myself, really doesn’t matter to me. The only thing I know is that we have a chance to reach the semi-finals of a major tournament, and that’s my sole focus.
