I Expected More
Beckham’s Dig at Real Madrid: The Better Team Won
David Beckham believes Arsenal deserved to win against Real Madrid and advance to the Champions League semi-finals.
Following the second leg between Real Madrid and Arsenal on Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu, which ended with the Gunners advancing to the Champions League semi-finals, many opinions emerged about the elimination of Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
Beckham, who knows Arsenal well and has also played for Real Madrid, praised Mikel Arteta’s team in an interview with CBS Sports: “An outstanding performance from this team and, naturally, great management from Mikel. They deserved this victory. Of course, I expected more of a comeback from Real, but it seems it wasn’t meant to be. Arsenal managed the game very well and progressed with excellent performances from the entire defensive line. Then, with Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka stepping up. I think it was an exceptional performance in an away game.”
Jamie Carragher asked Beckham, given that his son is an Arsenal fan and he himself is naturally a Manchester United supporter, whether he wants Arsenal to win the Champions League or not. Beckham replied: “Oh my God! That’s a terrible question. Actually, I think it’s great that an English team is in the semi-finals.
Naturally, if they can beat Paris Saint-Germain and reach the final, I think it will be something special for them as a club and for Mikel as a manager, for this team and for the performances they’ve delivered in this season’s Champions League. I hope they do well in the Champions League, but their opponent is Paris Saint-Germain, so you know which team I’ll be supporting that night.”
