Van der Vaart ruins Arsenal star’s joy

Saka, you’re wrong to think you’re a global star!

Bukayo Saka played a key role in Arsenal’s victory over Real Madrid last night, but Rafael van der Vaart says the English star is not as good a footballer as he is made out to be.

Saka, you're wrong to think you're a global star!

Bukayo Saka was the star of last night’s match between Real Madrid and Arsenal. Saka missed an early penalty but scored Arsenal’s first goal in the 65th minute to virtually end Carlo Ancelotti’s hopes of overturning the 3-0 first-leg defeat.

Although Vinícius equalized two minutes after Saka’s goal, the game ended 2-1 in favor of the Gunners after Martinelli scored, sending Arsenal through to the semi-finals.

    Bukayo Saka vs. Real Madrid

Saka had an altercation with Dani Carvajal in the tunnel at the Bernabéu yesterday, and to make matters worse, his celebration after scoring—mimicking Thierry Henry’s ‘shushing’ gesture to Real Madrid fans in 2006—angered the home supporters.

While Arsenal fans and most pundits are busy praising Bukayo Saka, Rafael van der Vaart has gone against the tide today, saying Saka is overrated.

Van der Vaart said about Arsenal’s English international star: “When Saka stood behind that penalty, he wanted to say, ‘Look, everyone should pay attention to me. I’m not an ordinary player. I’m a star.’ But those who understand football know that he is actually an ordinary player, and trying to make himself look special works against him. If Saka wants to stay at his current level, he must remain humble and train hard every day. He thinks he’s a world-class player, but he’s not.”
