Historical Review: Barcelona’s Dream of a Treble

Barcelona hopes to turn the dream of winning a treble into reality once again this season.

Historical Review: Barcelona's Dream of a Treble

According to reports, Hans-Dieter Flick’s Barcelona sees the treble within reach this season. They currently lead La Liga by four points over Real Madrid, have secured a spot in the Copa del Rey final (scheduled for April 26), and will face Inter Milan in the UEFA Champions League semifinals.

Barcelona has been in this position four times before, where they could have won all three available titles—the treble. They succeeded twice, won a double (La Liga and Champions League) once, and failed to secure the Copa del Rey and Champions League despite winning La Liga once. This marks their fifth attempt. The club’s website recalls this journey:

    2018-2019

Barcelona eliminated Manchester United in the Champions League quarterfinals and secured their semifinal spot. They were set to face Liverpool next to advance to the final at the Metropolitano Stadium. In La Liga, they led by nine points after 32 matchdays. A few days before the European knockout, Barcelona secured their 26th La Liga title.

However, despite the excitement of lifting the league trophy, Barcelona failed to reach the Champions League final. Despite a 3-0 first-leg win, Liverpool overturned the result in the second leg (4-0), crushing Barcelona’s European dream. To cap off the season, Barcelona lost the Copa del Rey final to Valencia in May, missing out on two of the three available titles.

    2014-2015

After defeating Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals, Barcelona secured their Champions League semifinal spot while leading La Liga by two points. They had already reached the Copa del Rey final. This seemingly unattainable dream ended in a fairy-tale fashion.

They first defeated Bayern Munich in the Champions League semifinals to reach the Berlin final. On May 17, they clinched the La Liga title with a 1-0 win over Atlético Madrid, a week before the season ended. On May 30, they lifted the Copa del Rey after beating Athletic Bilbao in the final at Spotify Camp Nou. Finally, they capped off their flawless season by winning the Champions League.

    2010-2011

Only the Copa del Rey was missing. Two seasons after their first treble, Barcelona came close to repeating it. In the 2010-11 season, Barcelona eliminated Shakhtar Donetsk in the Champions League quarterfinals. They had already reached the Copa del Rey final and led La Liga by eight points over Real Madrid after 31 matchdays.

Ultimately, they won both La Liga and the Champions League (after eliminating Real Madrid in the semifinals and defeating Manchester United in the final) but lost the Copa del Rey in a tense El Clásico that went into extra time.
