Italy’s Patience Runs Out
Harsh Criticism of Conte: ‘You Complain Too Much!’
Antonio Conte’s protests and complaints about Napoli’s management decisions and his players’ weaknesses have drawn sharp reactions from Italian media.
According to reports, Conte has appeared increasingly tense and irritable in recent days. Gazzetta dello Sport sarcastically pointed out that Giacomo Raspadori is “living proof” that Napoli’s bench players are not as bad as the Italian coach makes them out to be.
Conte has recently heavily criticized the lack of ambition and poor organization at Napoli, implicitly suggesting he might leave the club at the end of the season in July. During Napoli’s 1-0 win over Monza on Saturday, Conte was so angry that he reportedly insulted some Napoli fans in the stands even after Scott McTominay’s winning goal.
Conte also lamented the lack of a proper replacement for Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in the winter transfer window. McTominay’s goal against Monza came from an assist by Raspadori, who came off the bench, prompting Gazzetta to mockingly write that Conte’s bench options are not as disastrous as he claims.
Sebastiano Vernazza, an Italian journalist, wrote in his player ratings: “The coordination between Olivera and Spinazzola didn’t work, and even Gilmour failed to impress. But Conte saved himself with Raspadori—living proof that the substitutes aren’t as bad as claimed, and there’s no need for so much complaining.”
Under Conte’s leadership, Napoli now sits atop the Serie A table with 71 points, tied with Inter but behind on goal difference. Inter, however, has a game in hand and will face Bologna today.
