Mourinho: My Culture is Different from Turkey’s
Fenerbahce’s head coach criticized the football atmosphere in Turkey after a high-scoring draw against Kayserispor, blaming his players’ mistakes for the lost victory.
According to Varzesh3, Jose Mourinho reacted strongly to a question about the absent players of Kayserispor after Fenerbahce’s 3-3 home draw. He said: “In your first question after the match, you asked about Kayserispor’s absent players. Why? Are they under-10 or under-12 players? They are professionals, part of the team, and honest players.”
He continued critically: “You asked three questions and twice mentioned the absent players. The players who replaced them had great motivation and hunger. If we want to talk about the match, let’s talk about the match itself, not other things.”
Mourinho then analyzed the match technically, attributing the conceded goals to his players’ mistakes: “Today, we lost possession many times. All the goals we conceded were after our mistakes and losing the ball. I respect the opponent, but I must say these goals were the result of our own mistakes.”
He added: “We risked everything and managed to lead 3-2. En-Nesyri could have scored the fourth goal. But after a midfield mistake, we conceded the equalizer. It was a strange match, and we were very unlucky.”
The Portuguese coach also criticized the emotional and volatile atmosphere of Turkish football: “I analyze myself every day and try to improve. Winning or losing doesn’t change my perspective. But in this culture, if you win 4-5 consecutive matches, you’re the best team and coach. But if you get a few bad results, suddenly you’re the worst. This is the common culture here, but my culture is different.”
Mourinho concluded: “I’m unhappy with the result and take responsibility, but I am someone who keeps my balance.”
