Argentine Club Renames Stadium in Honor of Pope Francis
Marcelo Moretti, president of San Lorenzo, confirmed that their new stadium will be named in memory of Pope Francis.
According to reports, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, known as Pope Francis, passed away at the age of 88. He had been hospitalized since February 14 due to a lung infection. Known for his deep love of football, San Lorenzo’s president wrote an emotional farewell letter to him, published in Marca. Below is an excerpt from the letter:
“Today is a very sad day for everyone, especially for me as the president of San Lorenzo. I had a very close relationship with Francis. I first met him in 2016 in Rome when San Lorenzo played a friendly match at the Olympic Stadium. After that, we corresponded several times. In 2023, when I was elected president, he congratulated me and invited me to his residence in Santa Marta, Vatican.”
In September 2024, I visited him as a representative of the club. During that meeting, I brought many gifts from the club and asked for his permission to name our new stadium in the Boedo neighborhood after him. He enthusiastically accepted the proposal.
“That same day, he signed a symbolic club jersey for us, which we will display in the main hall when the stadium opens so all fans can appreciate it.”
My last communication with the Pope was recent. A month ago, I sent him my final letter, praying for his health. He responded on April 1, thanking me for the kindness. The Pope will forever remain in our hearts.
The club will hold a memorial ceremony for him, and in the upcoming match against Rosario Central, we will wear commemorative jerseys. May he rest in peace.
