Al Hilal Stumbles in Riyadh Derby
With Another Draw: Dark Days for Asia’s Leader
Al Hilal’s untimely draw hands Al Ittihad a golden opportunity to claim the Saudi Pro League title.
The highly anticipated match between Al Hilal and Al Shabab in the 29th round of the Saudi Pro League ended in a 2-2 draw, significantly impacting the title race. This result severely diminishes Al Hilal’s chances of winning the championship.
The game began with rapid attacks from both sides. In the 2nd minute, Al Shabab’s striker Abdulrazzaq Hamdallah threatened Al Hilal’s goal but failed to score. In the 7th minute, Portuguese midfielder Daniel Podence fired a powerful long-range shot past Yassine Bounou, putting Al Shabab ahead.
Al Hilal responded with several chances, the most notable being Salem Al-Dawsari‘s miss in the 12th minute. Their pressure paid off in the 31st minute when Sergej Milinković-Savić equalized with a precise finish from Al-Dawsari’s assist.
The second half started with Al Hilal taking the lead early. Al-Dawsari scored from inside the box, making it 2-1. However, Al Shabab equalized in the 68th minute with a stunning header from Mohammed Al-Shuwaikh. Just two minutes later, Carrasco thought he had scored the winner, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
In the dying minutes, Al Shabab’s Haroun Kamara missed a golden opportunity, while Al Hilal’s Mitrović hit the crossbar. Malcom and Ruben Neves also came close but were denied by Abdullah Al-Mayouf.
Ultimately, the thrilling match ended 2-2, leaving Al Hilal in second place with 62 points, while Al Shabab sits sixth with 51. This result is a huge gift for league leaders Al Ittihad, who now have 65 points and are on the verge of sealing the title.
