Jamie Carragher:
Arsenal’s Set-Piece Coach Should Have His Salary Halved!
Jamie Carragher, former Liverpool captain, has once again taken a dig at Nicolas Jover, Arsenal’s set-piece coach.
This criticism came after concerning statistics were published about Arsenal’s defensive performance on corner kicks.
Jover has been praised in the 2024-25 season for his significant impact on Arsenal’s attacking set-pieces. Arsenal scored their 16th league goal from a corner on Wednesday night, with Jakob Kiwior netting in the third minute.
However, Arsenal’s lead didn’t last. Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace equalized with a stunning volley. The match ended 2-2 after Jean-Philippe Mateta canceled out Leandro Trossard’s first-half goal.
After the match, Carragher highlighted statistics showing Arsenal are the second-worst team in the Premier League at defending set-pieces, with only Manchester United performing worse.
Carragher sarcastically remarked: “In percentage terms, only Manchester United have been worse than Arsenal at defending set-pieces. When there’s so much hype about the set-piece coach… Yes, they’re fantastic offensively, but defensively they have a big problem. Maybe his salary should be halved! Maybe it’s time to bring in a specialist defensive set-piece coach!”
One of the major stories of this season has been Arsenal’s set-piece performance, and the praise has been well-deserved. Arsenal can almost score or create dangerous chances from set-pieces in every game. Jover’s influence has undoubtedly been significant, but it’s fascinating that they also concede from the same situations.”
Carragher isn’t the first Sky Sports pundit to criticize Nicolas Jover. Previously, Gary Neville described him as “the most annoying man in football” due to his touchline antics during set-pieces.
