Uncertainty Over Serbian Star’s Extension
Jović-Milan: The Strangest Contract in Football
Luka Jović, who became Milan’s hero in the Coppa Italia derby, has one of the strangest contracts in football with the Rossoneri.
According to reports, Luka Jović played his best game of the season by scoring twice against Inter, playing a key role in Milan’s advancement to the Coppa Italia final. With this outstanding performance and the season nearing its end, uncertainty about the striker’s future has increased, especially due to his unusual contract with Milan. Now, Milan must decide whether to keep him or not.
The story began in 2022 when Real Madrid acknowledged their investment in Jović (€63 million paid to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2019) had failed and released him to Fiorentina for free to avoid paying his hefty wages.
Part of the agreement was that Fiorentina would pay half of Jović’s future transfer fee to Real Madrid. However, just a year later, when Fiorentina sold Jović to Milan for only €500,000, Real Madrid was far from pleased.
At Milan, Jović signed one of the strangest contracts in football: a three-year deal that makes him a free agent at the end of each season, with an extension only possible if both parties agree.
Jović is now at the end of his second season with Milan, earning €3.2 million annually. The question now is whether Milan will continue this investment and negotiate a new contract or let Jović leave for free.
