Lamine Yamal, the Heir to Messi in Crucial Moments
Lamine Yamal once again played a key role for Barcelona in a crucial match.
According to reports, Yamal contributed with two assists and defensive efforts, proving he doesn’t leave his team alone in critical moments. While waiting to wear Barcelona’s iconic No. 10 jersey one day, his performances at just 17 years old remind many of Lionel Messi.
Yamal thrives in big games like Messi and understands his responsibilities well. In the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid, despite not scoring (Courtois saved his attempt), he played a pivotal role by assisting Pedri and Ferran Torres twice. Additionally, in the final, he made 11 recoveries, becoming the team’s best alongside Iñigo Martínez, showcasing high defensive commitment.
In the Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid, he scored the equalizer in a Messi-esque fashion and also provided an assist to Alejandro Balde. In the La Liga Clásico at the Bernabéu, he scored Barcelona’s third goal, though VAR disallowed another legitimate goal, and Barcelona ultimately lost 3-2.
Yamal also shone in the Copa del Rey semifinals against Atlético Madrid, scoring in the first leg and providing an assist in the return leg to send Barcelona to the final. He also scored a crucial goal against Diego Simeone’s Atlético in La Liga, effectively knocking them out of the title race.
In European competitions, Yamal excelled in big matches as well. He provided an assist against Bayern Munich in the group stage, contributed a goal and an assist against Benfica, and scored Barcelona’s fourth goal against Borussia Dortmund in the quarterfinals, boosting the team’s morale ahead of the trip to Germany.
His brilliance isn’t limited to club football. For the Spanish national team, Yamal scored a stunning goal against France in the Euro 2024 semifinals and provided an assist to Nico Williams in the final, helping Spain defeat England.
