Bayer Leverkusen’s Massive Project: A €120 Million Sports Complex!
Bayer Leverkusen has been planning for years to build an advanced sports complex in Monheim, located 8.5 kilometers from the BayArena stadium.
According to reports, this €120 million project will include 12 football pitches and provide a shared facility for the club’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as youth teams. Currently, Bayer Leverkusen’s teams train at 17 separate locations, and this sports complex is considered essential for improving infrastructure and ensuring the club’s competitive future.
However, the project faces a major challenge as the expansion of the A1 and A3 highways, set to begin in 2031, will affect access to the stadium and parking during construction. The rerouting of the Stelzen highway, part of this highway project, has forced Leverkusen to find a quick solution to meet deadlines. The club must begin construction of the sports complex before the highway expansion starts to avoid disruptions to its operations.
The 22-hectare area designated for the sports complex belongs to Bayer AG but requires approval from local authorities in Monheim. Several political groups and a citizens’ group have opposed the project due to environmental and land-use concerns.
These obstacles have posed challenges for the project’s execution, but Fernando Carro, CEO of Bayer Leverkusen, remains optimistic. In an interview with Kicker, he stated: “This project is fundamental for Bayer Leverkusen’s long-term competitiveness and will enhance our development opportunities at all levels.”
The sports complex will be funded without public money and will include facilities such as offices for 450 employees. If approved, construction must begin by early 2027 to ensure timely completion and prevent the club from losing its current facilities. This project will not only consolidate Leverkusen’s infrastructure but also strengthen the club’s position in the Bundesliga and European competitions.
Bayer Leverkusen is taking a big step toward a sustainable and competitive future with this project, but its success depends on the club’s ability to overcome political and timing hurdles. Support from fans and efficient management could turn this dream into reality.
