Bayern Munich drew 3-3 against RB Leipzig in the 32nd week of the Bundesliga, delaying their title celebration.

90+5 Minute Goal Delays Bayern's Title Celebration

Bayern Munich, who had trailed 2-0 in the first half against RB Leipzig, staged a brilliant comeback in the second half with goals from Eric Dier, Michaël Olise, and Leroy Sane to take a 3-2 lead. However, in the 90+5 minute, they conceded a third goal, as Yussuf Poulsen scored in the dying moments, delaying Bayern’s title celebration. They are now nine points behind Bayer Leverkusen, who have a game in hand and could theoretically catch up. However, a single point next week will be enough for Bayern to secure the title.

Vincent Kompany insisted in his pre-match press conference that his team would not settle for a draw. The reason for his insistence and the numerous questions from journalists was that Bayern Munich could have secured the title today with just a draw, two weeks before the end of the season.

Bayern traveled to Leipzig without Harry Kane due to suspension. Kane was seated in the Red Bull Arena, hoping his teammates would end his trophy drought with a win or even a draw, so he could lift his first major trophy tonight: the Bundesliga title.

In the first half, after a few initial minutes, Bayern Munich took control of the game. They even created more chances against Leipzig’s goal but failed to capitalize. On the other hand, Leipzig made the most of every opportunity they got against Bayern’s goal.

Just eleven minutes into the game, Benjamin Šeško took full advantage of Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer’s poor positioning and sent a stunning long-range shot into the empty net after Neuer slipped while trying to recover.

Bayern Munich continued to dominate possession but failed to create any serious threats on Leipzig’s goal. They were punished for their style of play when Leipzig scored their second goal in the 39th minute through Lukas Klostermann from a set-piece, shocking Bayern and their fans.

The first half ended with Leipzig leading 2-0, despite Bayern having more chances, they only managed one shot on target. In contrast, Leipzig created four chances against Bayern’s goal, three of which were on target, resulting in two goals. Leipzig’s expected goals (xG) of 0.87 compared to Bayern’s 0.48 showed that the home team deserved their lead in the first half.

Kompany, seeing the title at risk, made two changes. He brought on Kingsley Coman for Thomas Müller, who is playing his final games for Bayern. Sacha Boey, who had a poor performance at full-back, was also replaced by Leon Goretzka.

Immediately after these changes, Bayern staged a stunning comeback, scoring two goals in less than a minute.

First, Bayern showed they could score from set-pieces. They converted a corner with a spectacular header from Eric Dier, who is rumored to be leaving in the summer.

Less than a minute later, Bayern capitalized on Leipzig’s defensive errors. The ball fell to Olise, who leveled the game with a precise shot.

While Leipzig made three substitutions, bringing on Yussuf Poulsen, Fabio Carvalho, and Benjamin Henrichs, Leroy Sane scored the third goal with a lightning-fast left-footed shot to complete Bayern’s brilliant comeback.

Bayern were now eagerly waiting for the final whistle to celebrate their Bundesliga title. However, substitute Yussuf Poulsen denied Bayern a definitive victory by scoring Leipzig’s third goal in the 90+5 minute, ending the game in a 3-3 draw. Bayern will now have to wait another week to secure the title, even if they only manage a draw in their next game.

Vincent Kompany, who took over a team that lost the title to Leverkusen last season, missed the chance to celebrate the title today but will secure it next week with just a draw, winning his first major trophy with the Bavarian club in his debut season.
