Torino’s Corner Double-Tap Controversy
Repeat of Julián Álvarez’s Penalty Drama in Serie A
In the Como-Torino match in Serie A, a controversy similar to Julián Álvarez’s double-tapped penalty occurred.
Ivan Ilić, Torino’s star, thought he had scored a late equalizer for his team, but his goal was disallowed due to Cristiano Biraghi’s double-tapped corner. This late goal by Ilić, scored at the Sinigaglia Stadium in Como, was ultimately ruled out after VAR review.
Torino’s midfielder scored on the rebound after a corner delivered by Biraghi, but replays showed Biraghi unintentionally touched the ball twice while taking the corner, leading to the disallowed goal.
This incident recalls the recent controversy in the Real Madrid vs. Atlético Madrid Champions League match, where Julián Álvarez’s penalty goal in the Round of 16 second leg was disallowed for a double touch. In both cases, Biraghi and Álvarez slipped before striking the ball, accidentally hitting it twice. Torino ultimately lost the match 1-0 to Como.
Despite protests from Atlético Madrid over Álvarez’s disallowed goal, Torino’s coach Paolo Vanoli accepted the referee’s decision regarding his team’s disallowed goal, saying: “A double-tapped corner has never happened to me before. I’ve seen it two or three times in penalties, but never in a corner. Of course, we must accept the situation and move forward to collect points.”
