The Strange Case of Barcelona’s Iraqi-German Prodigy

Noah Darvich, the young German-Iraqi talent, has yet to meet expectations at Barcelona B but was called up for the return leg against Inter Milan.

According to reports, Darvich has been included in Barcelona’s first-team squad for the second consecutive match, this time for the return leg against Inter Milan, just as he was previously called up for the match against Valladolid. This situation is similar to that of Landry Farre, who was on the bench against Valladolid. However, Dani Rodriguez, another Barcelona B player who was on the La Liga list, missed the chance to return due to a shoulder injury.

Among these three players, Darvich’s case stands out because he has been sidelined at Barcelona B and has failed to meet expectations during his two seasons there.

    Noah Darvich

Noah Darvich, who joined Barcelona as a gem of German football, has had limited opportunities at Barcelona B. The U17 World Cup winner and current captain of Germany’s U19 team has struggled to secure a consistent role in Barcelona B’s 3-3-4 system. His classic attacking midfielder traits, including dribbling and ball control, have not fit well with the team’s style, hindering his progress.

Barcelona B coaches, including Marcos last season and Albert Sanchez and Sergi Mila this season, have not given him a central role. Darvich has only sporadically shown his talent, with limited playing time preventing his breakthrough.

    Noah Darvich in action

Darvich’s best period at Barcelona B came in November when injuries to key players gave him five consecutive starts as a false winger. Albert Sanchez, the coach at the time, explained that the change was due to team needs, but Darvich performed well in this unfamiliar role, providing two assists. However, the return of key players like Alish Garrido, Toni Fernandez, and Pedro Soma pushed him back to the bench.

Darvich is now a bench option, but first-team coach Hansi Flick has shown trust in him, inviting him to the pre-season camp last summer. With Barcelona B at risk of relegation, the coaches prioritize stability, and players like Toni or Jofre Torrents are less likely to be called up. The upcoming summer will be decisive for Darvich; if Barcelona B is relegated or he fails to earn more playing time, he may leave Barcelona.
