Flick’s Tough Task
Barcelona’s Lack of Experience in Champions League Semi-Finals: Only Five Players!
Hans-Dieter Flick faces a tough challenge against Inter, especially since his players are young and inexperienced.
Currently, Barcelona’s squad has only three players who have experienced winning the Champions League and know what it means to lift Europe’s most prestigious club trophy.
Marc-André ter Stegen won the title with Barcelona in the 2014-15 season during their 3-1 victory over Juventus. Robert Lewandowski triumphed with Bayern Munich in the 2019-20 season, the same campaign where Barcelona suffered their infamous 8-2 defeat in Lisbon. Hans-Dieter Flick was also on Bayern’s bench that season. The third player is Andreas Christensen, who won with Chelsea in the 2020-21 season after defeating Manchester City 1-0 in the final.
These three players, now aiming for their second Champions League title, are not the only ones with semi-final experience. Among Barcelona’s squad, only two other players have played in the Champions League semi-finals:
Frenkie de Jong reached the semi-finals with Ajax in the 2018-19 season. That team won 1-0 against Tottenham in London but were eliminated in the second leg in Amsterdam after a 3-2 defeat, missing out on the final against Liverpool in Madrid.
The other player is Dani Olmo, who reached the semi-finals with RB Leipzig in the 2019-20 season. He scored a crucial goal in the quarter-final against Atlético Madrid, contributing to a 2-1 victory, but Leipzig lost 3-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in the semi-finals.
