No to Real and City: German Star Prefers Domestic Giant
Florian Wirtz, Bayer Leverkusen’s midfielder, has informed Xabi Alonso of his intention to join Bayern Munich.
Florian Wirtz, the 22-year-old star of Bayer Leverkusen and one of Europe’s brightest talents, has made his decision: he only wants to join Bayern Munich! According to Sport Bild, the creative midfielder has informed Xabi Alonso, Leverkusen’s coach, that he has no interest in moving to Real Madrid or Manchester City and aims to join the Bundesliga champions.
This decision, backed by preliminary agreements between Wirtz’s representatives and Bayern, could mark one of the biggest transfers of summer 2025. Wirtz, who has played a key role for Leverkusen this season with 18 goals and 24 assists, has long been on the radar of European giants.
Real Madrid and Manchester City have repeatedly expressed interest in signing the German international. However, Wirtz, who is under contract with Leverkusen until 2027, has firmly chosen Bayern Munich as his next destination.
Sources indicate that Hans Wirtz, Florian’s father and advisor, who has close ties with Uli Hoeneß, Bayern’s honorary president, has held positive negotiations with the club in recent months, reaching a preliminary agreement.
Fernando Caro, Leverkusen’s CEO, estimated Wirtz’s value at at least €150 million in an interview with Radio Marca last April, though he later called this statement a mistake. However, formal negotiations between Bayern and Leverkusen are expected to begin soon, as Wirtz is Bayern’s primary transfer target for summer 2025.
The exact timing of the transfer remains unclear, but given Wirtz’s long-term contract and his desire to join Bayern, this move could break the German transfer record. Bayern, fresh from their recent Bundesliga title, aims to strengthen their squad for the Club World Cup and Champions League, hoping Wirtz will bring creativity and youth to their midfield.
