Olympiacos Qualifies for Champions League Group Stage Thanks to PSG’s Final Berth
Olympiacos, the Greek Super League champions, have secured direct qualification to the group stage of next season’s UEFA Champions League after Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan reached the final.
Olympiacos, the champions of the Greek Super League, will return to the UEFA Champions League next season after a five-year absence, thanks to Paris Saint-Germain’s advancement to the final.
The newly crowned Greek champions confirmed their qualification on Thursday after UEFA’s validation. The club stated on their social media accounts: “Following Paris Saint-Germain’s victory over Arsenal in the Champions League semifinals, the French capital club will face Inter Milan in the final on May 31 in Munich, Germany. Both teams have already secured Champions League spots through their domestic leagues, allowing the champion’s slot to be reallocated, giving us the opportunity to participate.”
According to UEFA Champions League regulations, some clubs must compete in the qualifying rounds to secure a spot in the 36-team group stage. This ranking is based on UEFA’s club coefficient, determined by teams’ performances in continental competitions over a five-year period.
Olympiacos currently ranks 37th in Europe. Thanks to their Conference League triumph last year, they became the first Greek club to win a continental title.
The Greek champions were initially set to enter the Champions League qualifying rounds in July, needing to overcome three opponents to reach the group stage. However, after securing their 48th Greek league title last weekend, they no longer need to go through the qualifying phase.
Owned by shipping magnate Evangelos Marinakis, Olympiacos last participated in the Champions League in the 2020-21 season, finishing third in their group behind Manchester City and Porto.
