Real Madrid Will Do Anything to Win
Flick: I Never Want a Player Like Xavi!
Hans-Dieter Flick spoke about Xavi Hernandez in the El Clasico press conference, praising him while also making a pointed remark about his smoking habit.
Barcelona, who have won three consecutive official El Clasicos this season, will host Real Madrid tomorrow in a match that could decide the La Liga title. Barcelona currently lead by 4 points, and a win would bring them closer to the trophy. Even a draw would be a favorable result for Barcelona, who are not in the best mental state after their Champions League elimination against Inter Milan.
Hans-Dieter Flick addressed reporters in the pre-match press conference.
Unpredictable El Clasico Outcome: “You can never predict it. Two big teams are facing each other, and we hope to make the most of our home advantage. Both teams are strong and will fight for three points. I hope we succeed.”
Team Morale Ahead of the Decisive Match: “The team is in good spirits. After the loss in Milan, everyone knows it’s not easy to bounce back. But we are doing our job well. Four games remain, and El Clasico is crucial. We must trust our plan.”
Lewandowski and Balde’s Condition: “I don’t think they’ll start. Gerard and others have performed well. After this match, we have three more games. Maybe they’ll play some minutes in the second half.”
Boosting Team Morale: “We’ve talked to the players. Everyone knows El Clasico requires 100% effort—being aggressive and controlling the game. We have the fans’ support, and we’re playing at home.”
Xavi’s Fixed Role: “Yes, he will be a fixed part of the team.”
Importance of La Liga: “La Liga is the best title. You play 38 games, and if you win it, it’s the fairest trophy.”
Potential Lack of Motivation: “No. If you ask the players, El Clasico is a match everyone wants to win. We always go for victory with full effort.”
Defensive Weakness: “We have four games left and are focused on each. El Clasico is the most important for fans and staff. But it’s not about energy. The players have worked hard this season.”
Four El Clasicos in One Season: “In these games, Real comes to win, and so do we. The table doesn’t matter—we just want to win. I know Real will do anything to win.”
Full-Backs Eric Garcia and Gerard Pique: “Both are very professional and have improved a lot. Gerard was outstanding in the Champions League semifinals. We missed Balde, and his return is great. As for Eric, I love his mentality. When I ask him to play as a 2 or 6, he says okay. He’s very important.”
Expectations from Real Madrid: “We might see both sides of Real. When we played them, they sometimes pressed man-to-man. They’re strong in transition. That’s a style we might see tomorrow.”
High Pressing: “From the start, I made my philosophy clear. Initially, there were doubts because it was different. Usually, the defensive line is visible, but pressing is also important. The players have done it brilliantly. They’ve adapted well and are happy with this style. When I see them train, I’m pleased. Our goal is to win another trophy.”
Inigo Martinez Compared to Other Defenders: “Tough question. Inigo is no ordinary player. He loves playing with depth and adapts amazingly. He’s a leader, focused on winning. He trains hard, spreads positivity, and is a fighter. A great leader. I’m very happy with him.”
Xavi and Lewandowski’s Future: “Contracts are Deco’s work. I’m happy with Xavi—he’s calm, has a cool personality, and thinks positively. I think he wants to stay. Lewandowski has one more year, and we’ll see. Xavi sometimes smokes a bit—honestly, I never want a player like him (Flick laughs)—but he’s at the right age and calmer. We have no problem with him.”
