Paul Scholes:
Amorim Should Learn Coaching from Arteta
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes believes Ruben Amorim should model his coaching approach after Mikel Arteta.
According to reports, Arsenal is on the verge of another trophyless season after being eliminated from the UEFA Champions League semifinals by Paris Saint-Germain with a 3-1 aggregate defeat.
Ahead of Sunday’s match against Liverpool at Anfield, where Arteta’s men must form a guard of honor for the new Premier League champions, Arsenal is locked in a tough battle to secure second place in the standings, with Manchester City, Newcastle, and Chelsea hot on their heels.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has endured a nightmare Premier League campaign, sitting in 15th place. However, they still have a chance to salvage their season by winning at least one trophy—the Europa League final against Tottenham on May 21.
Despite this, Paul Scholes claims he would prefer his former club to be in Arsenal’s current position. The Manchester United legend believes Amorim should try to follow a similar path to Arteta, who, after two consecutive eighth-place finishes, has led Arsenal to second place in the last two seasons.
Scholes wrote in his TNT Sports column: “I think Mikel Arteta has done a fantastic job since arriving at Arsenal. He could finish second for the third consecutive season, and I believe Ruben Amorim can learn a lot from Arteta’s work over the past five or six years.
Imagine if Amorim could guide Manchester United to second place in the league and the Champions League semifinals in three or four years. I would definitely swap United’s current season with Arsenal’s, even if United wins the Europa League. Without a doubt.
Arsenal just needs to cross that line. The next step for them is winning a major trophy, and I don’t think they’re far from it. Everyone says Arsenal keeps finishing second, but that’s a much better position than where Manchester United is now. I’d love United to be in a position where they even have the chance to lose a final. I hope you understand what I mean.
This can’t be a bad example for Amorim. He can look at Arsenal, study Arteta’s process, and that could be a starting point for Manchester United. I believe that once United can finish second in the league and reach the Champions League semifinals, given their history and experience, they have the ability to take the next step and win trophies because they’ve proven they can do it before. Whereas a team like Arsenal hasn’t yet consistently shown they can win major trophies year after year.”
