Benzema Brings Al-Ittihad One Step Closer to Championship
On a night of brilliance from Karim Benzema, Al-Ittihad secured a 3-0 victory.
Al-Ittihad continued their dominance in the Saudi Pro League with a commanding 3-0 victory over Al-Fayha. The match, held at Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium during the 31st round, saw Laurent Blanc’s squad extend their lead with a flawless performance, reaching 74 points—just three points away from clinching the title.
In the first half, Al-Ittihad started aggressively, creating early chances. Angolo Kanté rattled the crossbar in the 6th minute. However, it was Karim Benzema who broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with a deceptive left-footed strike, assisted by Unai Hernández, beating Al-Fayha’s Panamanian goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera. Benzema had another opportunity later but was denied by Mosquera.
The second half followed the same pattern, with Abdulrahman Al-Aboud setting up Benzema for his second goal just nine minutes in. The French star calmly slotted the ball past Mosquera, taking his season tally to 21 goals and moving into second place in the scoring charts. Three minutes later, Benzema, feeling discomfort, was substituted for Abdulaziz Al-Bishi.
Despite Benzema’s exit, Al-Ittihad continued their attacks, and in the 75th minute, Al-Fayha defender Mohammed Al-Baqawi scored an own goal while attempting to clear a cross from Mohannad Al-Shanqeeti. Late substitutions sealed Al-Ittihad’s dominant display, securing three crucial points. Their next match is against Al-Raed, whose relegation was confirmed after today’s defeat.
